Function / Content

This series consists of 27 registers relating to births recorded across the Northern Territory (including Darwin, Gove, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs), and some parts of Western Australia, South Australia and Queensland. Early birth registers relate to Aboriginal people in the Top End and Barkly region and include name, sex, date of birth and birthplace. Other information collected includes Medicare numbers (volume no.1, box no.1), birthplace of parents (volume no.2, box no.1), and annotations regarding date of death (volume no.3, box no.1). Annual birth registers include the following information; name, date of birth, birth weight, mother, father and birthplace (volume nos 4, 6, 8, box no.1; volume nos 9, 11, 13, box no.2; volume nos 18, 19, 20, box no.3; and, volume no.27, box no.4). Monthly birth registers contain the following information; name, date of birth, mother, father, HRN (Hospital Registration Number, if applicable), date of death, and remarks (volume nos 5, 7, box no.1; volume nos 10, 12, 15, 17, box no.2; volume nos 21, 23, box no.3; and, volume no.26, box no.4). Community birth registers are ordered by locations first and then consist of the following information; name, date of birth, birth weight, mother, father, and birthplace (volume nos 14, 16, box no.2; volume nos 22, 24, box no.3; and, volume no.25, box no.4). Some language used in these records (which reflects the language used at the time the records were created) may be offensive. This series may contain references to Aboriginal people who have died, which may cause sadness and distress to their relatives. No offence has been intended by making these records available. Care and discretion should be used when viewing these records.
